Can you believe it? Life is so crazy right now. Cancellations abound. Possibly your life is similar to mine, literally almost everything has canceled because of the coronavirus. Everything.

I’m not sure that any of us ever thought this type of disruption of life was even possible. The Spanish Flu of 1918 and the Great Depression just seemed like topics in an American history class. You too?

With our lives in an upheaval, our calendars in total lock down, and almost all of us under some form of stay-at-home orders, my concern is that many will cancel Easter (better known as Resurrection Sunday) as well.

Friends (especially husbands and fathers), let’s intentionally help lead ourselves and our families to prepare and celebrate Resurrection Sunday. Seriously.

In fact, with simpler lives, this could be the most impactful Resurrection Sunday ever for you, your family, and your friends. Do not underestimate what God might want to do, ok?

YESTERDAY WAS PALM SUNDAY

It's the start of a week of celebration! The week leading up to Resurrection Sunday begins this week. On Palm Sunday (April 5), we celebrated Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. We often call this the Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-44; John 12:12-19).

What can you do?

  • Read one or more of the narratives of the Triumphal Entry (as a review).
  • Get your family together and discuss the last week of Jesus’ life.
  • Ask them questions that come out of the passages or take their questions. Don’t be afraid not to know something. You can always write it down and look it up during the week.
  • If you have small children, act it out and give everyone a part to play.
  • Take the four Gospels and compare them. As a family, put the verses together from the various Gospels’ perspectives. Come up with a master story of verses from all four Gospels. Possibly start with Mark and work out from there.

FOLLOW JESUS’ LIFE OVER HIS LAST WEEK

To help prepare you to celebrate Resurrection Sunday, read together throughout the week. If you are single or live alone, then ask a friend to read along with you throughout the week as well. As you read, ask each other questions, consider what Jesus is doing, and try to capture the thoughts of the disciples as the week goes along.

Here are a couple of options.

PLAN AND DO SOMETHING

With life in an upheaval, let’s be intentional together. Plan activities with your family, times of reading, discussion, and meditation over the next 10 days in preparation for Resurrection Sunday. More than every we need a reminder of the love, sacrificial death, glorious resurrection, and victorious ascension of Jesus Christ. As the Suffering Servant (Isaiah 53) He died for us. As those who strive to live and love like Him (Eph 5:1-2), this time may do us well. We will be better for it.

Especially you husbands and fathers  – let’s do this and lead our families well! Ministry Leader and Pastor - now is the time to take up leadership to a new level. Amen?

In His love and grace,
